Friends Remember Missoula Avalanche Victim

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

One of the three victims rescued after an urban avalanche in Missoula passed away, as her husband recovers in the hospital. Family friends said the couple has a lot of support and friends throughout the community. They said Michel Colville, and her husband Fred Allendorf had the type of connection you don't see often.

Three days after being rescued after her home was demolished by an avalanche, 68-year-old Michel Colville passed away from her injuries.

"She was very energetic," said her friend, Melody Anderson. "She was a very good, devoted friend, and when she had something in mind, it always got done."

Friends like Anderson, have only good things to say about Colville, and her husband, Former UM professor, Fred Allendorf.

"We were just good friends, you know, did this and that together, and went on hikes to Glacier National Park too," Anderson said.

Colville loved art, and even made clothing and jewelry.

"Everything she did had that enthusiasm," Anderson said.

Anderson said she was shocked when she found out on Saturday, her friends' home was the one destroyed by an avalanche the night before.

She said, "It just seems incredible. They're sitting just there and..."

When the avalanche hit the home, an 8-year-old neighbor boy, Phoenix Scoles, was also buried, and rescued just 45 minutes later. Three hours later Allendorf was found alive, followed by Colville.

"At the time they were searching for Fred and Michel, and we were just hoping and praying they'd be found, so it was a relief, almost a miracle I think," said UM's Associate Dean of Biological Sciences, Charlie Janson.

Both were put in critical condition, but when Allendorf's condition improved, Colville's didn't and she passed away.

"It's pretty emotional for me to think about it, and I haven't gone through what he's gone through," Janson said.

Allendorf is in serious condition. Friends said he's doing well, but is still in shock.

"He's going to miss his partner, his friend, his buddy, all of these things she was to him," Anderson said.

A fund is set up for Allendorf at Missoula Federal Credit Union. You can donate to the Allendorf Family Fund by calling the Missoula Federal Credit Union at (406) 523-3300. A Caring Bridge account is also set up to follow his progress.

The 8 year-old boy, Phoenix Scoles, was released from the hospital Sunday in good condition.

SPOKANE, Wash. - One of the great parts about living in Spokane, is if you head out of town in any direction, you're going to run into some beautiful farm land. I grew up south of Spokane, near Plaza, and one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the porch at night and stare south towards Rosalia at all of the rolling hills of wheat, lentils, barley and peas.
