City Bus Delivers People with Disabilities, Seniors through Blizzard

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Schools, businesses and even some county departments shut down in the blizzard.

But one city bus line servicing people with disabilities and seniors continued to operate through the snowy conditions.

The Mountain Line Paratransit buses regularly deliver between 50-100 people to doctors appointments and other destinations every day.

Their numbers were down today due to the weather, but they said they continue to operate, no matter the conditions.

Missoula Manor resident Henrietta Stoos said she takes the paratransit bus every Thursday to get groceries.

"Because it's very good service, and the paratransit transit people are very nice," she said.

Stoos said she's usually joined by other residents who need to run errands or get to doctor appointments.

"I usually like to walk, but if it's too bad in the winter, I'd rather take the paratransit," she said.

"It's really vital for some folks, we transport folks to dialysis, for instance-- they have to go," said Jeff Logan, the Operations Manager at Mountain Line.

Logan said they run the city's eight paratransit buses Monday through Saturday, year-round.

"We do have some of our vehicles chained up right now, some of the front wheel drive vehicles we've got studded snow tires on them," he explained.

Logan said Mountain Line is required to provide bus services for people with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The paratransit buses are available for anyone unable to get to and from a bus stop, board a bus ramp or navigate the regular bus system.

"You know, we're going to be running, if they've got a trip scheduled, and they want to make the trip, we'll be there for them," Logan said.

Logan said 50 out of their 80 appointments canceled today once the blizzard hit.

"We are running and that they can take their trip if they want to," he said.

Stoos added, "Yeah, I'm glad they are, but I was surprised they were!"

Mountain Line also offers a senior bus service, open to anyone over the age of 60.
