County Works To House More Than 100 Neglected Cattle

Posted: Updated:
THREE FORKS -

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, the County Attorney's Office and the Department of Livestock work to find a good home for the more than one-hundred neglected cattle on a ranch in Clarkston.

The three departments met on Friday morning to discuss what the next steps will be to ensure the cattle are properly taken care of in the future.

The cattle and about a dozen horses were seized from the ranch on Tuesday after they were found to be extremely malnourished.

Sheriff Brian Gootkin said the first step is to move the cattle from the Headwaters Stockyard and determine if any criminal charges will be pressed.

He said in the meantime, the cattle remain the county's responsibility.

"Wherever we do decide to take those cattle, it's our responsibility to ensure that they are taking care of on that ranch," said Gootkin. "We will monitor them until a Judge says otherwise."

The Sheriff's Office, the Department of Livestock and the cattle's owner are all scheduled to meet on Monday afternoon to make a decision on where the cattle will go.
