Hotel Explosion Caused By Methamphetamine Lab

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Bozeman Police say a small explosion at a hotel room in Bozeman on Tuesday evening was caused by a methamphetamine lab.

Glass covered the hallway of the Continental Motor Inn on East Main in Bozeman where a minor explosion happened on Tuesday evening.

Shannon Freeman was staying in the hotel, a few doors down from where the incident happened.

She said she walked out her door and immediately called 911.

"There was smoke and stuff was just coming out the room and spreading down the hallways," said Freeman. "It was terrible."

She described the explosion as being similar to an earthquake.

"There was noise and the whole building just shook," said Freeman. "I ran out the door and the window was on the ground and there was smoke."

During the explosion, the room's window was blown out and the door was bent. No one was injured and there was little fire damage to the building.

"We did evacuate the surrounding area and that room itself has been blocked off as part of the investigation," said Captain Steve Crawford, Bozeman Police Department.

Captain Steve Crawford with the Bozeman Police Department said the explosion was caused by a methamphetamine lab inside the room.

"The investigators responded to it and are looking into evidence," said Crawford. "There was enough evidence to label it as a meth lab."

The Missouri River Drug Task Force is currently investigating the incident.

"The investigators will process the evidence that is ceased and collected. Then, there will a hands on investigation in determining who's responsible," said Crawford.

Crawford said they do not know how many people were in the room at the time.

While no one is charged at this time, Bozeman Police said that Devon Wayne Arnaud, 26, was arrested in connection to the explosion on a probation violation.

He appeared in court on Thursday morning and is being held on a $100,000 bond. Documents showed he is a tier three sex offender and admitted to using methamphetamine.

Paperwork filed stated that he is being investigated for running a clandestine meth lab.

A press conference with the Missouri River Drug Task Force Commander is scheduled Thursday morning.

The last explosion in Bozeman was a natural gas explosion that occurred downtown on March 5, 2009. One person died as a result of that explosion.
