MSU Pushing For Montana Made Food On Campus

Posted: Updated:

Montana State University wants to make sure the school's dining services are feeding students food that is mostly produced in Montana.

The university is taking major steps to make that happen.

MSU food services have been pushing for Montana made food in the last 10 years.

Until now that program was coordinated by students.

Now Nicole Morgan is building on that to bring more Montana made food in campus.

"Our food system is pretty broken all across this nation so by Montana State University dedicating itself to Montana purchasing, we're doing our part to fix that," said Nicole Morgan, MSU Montana Made Program manager.

Morgan said making serving Montana-grown food to university students will also do a good service to Montana's economy.

"It's a big economic development goal to use our purchasing power on campus to provide financial stability to local venders," said Morgan.

Right now MSU gets food from 50 different venders from Bozeman to Glendive, Kalispell to Missoula.

They hope to continue buying food from more Montana communities.

Right now, Morgan said they showcase Montana food at least once a week in the dining halls.

"We dedicate here on Thursday nights a Montana Made meal where we source as much as we can locally," said Morgan.

Those Montana made meals are being currently offered in all dining facilities at MSU including concessions, the bakery and catering.

"I really hope that this program doesn't just change the operations in food services, it also changes how our students think about food in general," said Morgan.

Morgan said MSU plans to eventually have 100 percent of its food come from Montana.

She said it will take more than ten years to reach that goal.
