Victims In Fatal Crash Are Remembered

MISSOULA -

People in Missoula and its surrounding communities have heavy hearts after the names of the victims in a fatal head-on crash south of Lolo are released.

ABC FOX MONTANA'S Ashley Sanchez found out more about 23-year-old Hannah Capen and 9-year-old Meghan Okon as they are remembered by their loved ones.

One classroom at Hellgate Elementary School is full of the memory of 23-year-old Hannah Capen, a fourth grade teacher, and eighth grade volleyball coach.

"It'll just be a real loss for our community here at Hellgate Elementary. We loved having her as part of our family, and she will always be member of Hellgate family," Hellgate elementary Superintendent Doug Reisig said.

Capen lost her life Saturday night, after she lost control of her pick up truck on Highway 93 south of Lolo, crossed the center line and drove into oncoming traffic. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Obviously it's been a really hard day for us and our kids, but our issues pale compared to what the Capen family and Okon family are going through," Reisig said.

Reisig said Capen was only in her first year of teaching, but had a knack for dealing with children.

"Hannah was well on her way to becoming a wonderful teacher, not only did she understand the science of teaching, but she knew how to connect with kids," Reisig said.

Capen wasn't the only person whose life was taken in the accident. A passenger in the SUV, 9-year-old Meghan Okon passed away in the hospital later that night.

"Meghan was a beautiful little girl," Reisig said.

Meghan went to Florence-Carlton Elementary School, but she also had many friends in Missoula. She was on a local swim team, and her dad is a Missoula firefighter.

"Many of our people here at the school know the family and know Meghan, and she was just a wonderful little girl," Reisig said.

Both Capen and Okon will be forever missed.

"I'm just so sorry for both families that were involved in this tragedy," Reisig said.

Missoula County Sheriff's officials said the crash was a result of speed and icy roads.

Capen's 25-year-old husband, Okon's mother, and another young passenger were injured in the crash. At last check, they were still recovering in the hospital.
