Agriculture Needs Younger Farmers and Ranchers

BOZEMAN -

With the average age of farmers and ranchers in Montana at 58.9, a new study finds there is a need for younger generations to take over.

Agriculture students at Montana State University said they think the younger generation doesn't return to the farm because they like the convenience of cities and towns.

They also said people need to get involved as early as elementary school with programs like 4-H and FFA to educate themselves about the lifestyle that is still needed across the country.

"Agriculture is booming right now and we have to feed the world," said Lane Nordlund, MSU Agriculture student. "There is a lot of opportunity right now for farmers and ranchers in America."

The U.S. Agriculture census said there are more farmers under 35 than there were in 2007, but not at the levels they need to be to sustain farming into the future.
