Yellowstone Nat'l Park: 150 Bison Captured So Far

Yellowstone National Park wildlife managers have captured 150 bison so far in an effort to reduce the number of animals migrating outside the park.

Park Spokesman Al Nash, said as of Thursday, 50 of the captured bison have been sent to slaughter.  

Migrating bison are captured as part of an agreement to keep the park's herd at 3,000 animals.

The agreement was made to avoid the spread of brucellosis, a disease carried by wild animals that can force pregnant cattle to abort their young.

"In order for us to approach our agreed upon target population, bison have to go somewhere," Nash said.

"They can go to one of our three tribal partners under agreement and then be transported to slaughter."

At the end of the summer, there were 4,600 bison in the park.
