Police Find Murder Suspect Through Forensic Evidence

BUTTE -

A 23-year-old man is in South Dakota custody and expected to be extradited back to Butte where he will face deliberate homicide charges for allegedly murdering his father in 2008.

Between November 28 and December 23, 2008, police say Adam Hatfield, who is now 23, killed his father Matthew Hatfield at the family's home in Butte, which neighbors say has been abandoned for years.

"Adam was interviewed on the 23rd as well as on the 24th," said Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester. "We were just unable to locate Matt and we were not able to find Matt, so we couldn't determine what exactly had occurred."

On December 23 Matt was reported missing by his sister.

At that time Matt and his son Adam had been living in this cabin, taking care of Matt's mother who lived in this home.

For more than five years, evidence was collected while police searched for Matt, but with no luck, including for Sheriff Lester who was the lead detective on the case.

"Through evidence that was recovered at the scene, along with additional items that were sent to the crime lab, we now forensically can show that Matt Hatfield is deceased and we can also prove that Adam Hatfield knowingly, purposely caused the death of his father," Lester said.

Matt's body is still missing, but forensic evidence, such as DNA tests that now points to Adam as the alleged killer and that he used a weapon.

On Wednesday he was finally arrested on a warrant in South Dakota.

"Adam can do one of two things," said Lester. "He can waive extradition at which point we will transport him back here to face the deliberate homicide charge. Or he can basically fight the extradition at which time we would have to obtain a governor's warrant to bring Adam to our jurisdiction."

Adam Hatfield is scheduled to appear in court for an extradition hearing tomorrow morning in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

If extradited, he is expected to be back in Butte by the end of next week.
