County Attorney Responds to Sexual Discrimination Allegations

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Missoula County Attorney Fred Van Valkenburg said the DOJ's allegations of sexual discrimination are meant to sway public opinion against his office.

Last Friday, the DOJ issued a 20-page letter of findings, just three days after Van Valkenburg filed a lawsuit against them for attempting to investigate his office.

DOJ investigators state the county attorney's office gives women's sexual assault cases low priority, and victims are often treated with disrespect.

Van Valkenburg said the allegations are unfounded, and will lead the public to distrust the prosecutors within his office.

"What they've done is very unethical, it's very unfair, it's filled with mistruths, half truths, outright lies," he said.

Van Valkenburg filed the complaint for declaratory judgement last Tuesday, and he said the DOJ has 60 days to respond.

Then a federal judge will decide if the DOJ has the right to investigate the county attorney's office.
