MT Hospitals Deal With Nation-Wide Shortage In IV Fluids

MISSOULA -

A shortage of certain IV solutions has hospitals across the nation scrambling to manage their supply of one of the most commonly used drugs.

Hospitals, including Community Medical Center in Missoula, have been making some adjustments as they deal with a shortage in common saline, and other IV fluids used to hydrate hospital patients.

Community Medical Center clinical pharmacy manager, Kevin Cady said the shortage is due to an increased demand in fluids, possibly caused by flu cases. Cady said right now, they expect the shortage to be short-term.

"We've been able to get through this, however, we've had to change a few things. Some of it might be a certain size that's shorted, so if it's a one liter bag that's shorted, we may have smaller size bag, and be able to treat patients with the same products," Cady said.

Doctors have also used other medications in place of the solutions since the shortage. Meantime, the three manufacturer's of the product, Baxter International Inc, Hospira Inc and B. Braun Medical Inc, are stepping up production, and the FDA is looking into alternative sources
