Four Buried Snowmobilers Walk Away From Avalanche

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH -

The Flathead Avalanche Center says four snowmobilers walked away after triggering and being buried by a snow slide Saturday in the southern Whitefish Range.

According to an online form sent in by one of the snowmobilers, it happened on a group of south-facing slopes known as the "Seven Sisters."

The avalanche averaged about a foot deep, 900 feet wide, and ran about 700 feet downhill.

None of the four were completely buried, and no serious injuries were noted.

It was reported that nearly six feet of debris covered Canyon Creek Road.

"I'm certainly glad that everyone made it out and that nothing more serious happened, but I certainly wasn't surprised," said Erich Peitzsch, the interim director of the Flathead Avalanche Center.

Before a full report is posted, the Center is waiting to hear back from one snowmobiler.

The Center still rates avalanche danger as high in the Flathead Range, and recommends keeping out of avalanche terrain.

This weekend, six people were caught in avalanches in western Montana.

In addition to the four snowmobilers, a snow slide partially covered a skier in the Bitterroot mountains on Saturday, and injured another skier near Big Sky on Sunday.

Another person was injured near Big Sky.
