City Looks To Update Sidewalk Corners

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Making Bozeman's sidewalks more handicap accessible is one of the 25 priorities the Bozeman City Commission set out to accomplish in the next couple of years.

City officials said of Bozeman's 1,300 intersections, at least 100 of them don't have sidewalks that meet the latest Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

They said ADA sidewalk corners are installed whenever a street is built or reconstructed.

The problem now is with streets that are in the older sections of town.

"The backlog that Bozeman has is some of the older streets that were put in place well before the legislation, so those are the streets we have to go back and retro-fit," said Craig Wollard, Bozeman Public Works director.

Wollard said the city has been retro-fitting about 40 sidewalk corners a year for the last decade.

To update all the sidewalks in the city, it would cost $1.5 million.
