Avalanche Experts Warn People To Avoid Backcountry

Posted: Updated:
HUNGRY HORSE -

Avalanche danger is rated high in much of the valley's backcountry, leading the Flathead Avalanche Center to warn people not to venture onto the slopes.

Several inches of new snow and rising temperatures created a slab that could give with even a slight trigger.

High winds are also playing a role in this latest snow slide warning.

Lower elevations are warm enough that they've been getting some rain.

Even the higher elevations are getting warmer.

"We're advising people to stay out of avalanche terrain at this time until things moderate," said Seth Carbonari with the Flathead Avalanche Center.

This includes the Whitefish, Swan, and Flathead ranges as well as parts of Glacier National Park.
