UPDATE: Friends and family confirm the man killed by law enforcement yesterday was 23 year old Jedidiah Zillmer.

SPOKANE, Wash. - We continue to learn new details about Tuesday night’s officer involved shooting that left a 23-year-old man dead. It all started when the man called police saying that he wanted to die from a suicide by law enforcement. Deputies spotted the man’s vehicle on I-90 and followed him for miles before the chase ended at the Sullivan exit in Spokane Valley.

We know that the man who was killed had several guns with him and was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to law enforcement. The 23-year-old was a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and a Purple Heart recipient after serving in Afghanistan. According to a law enforcement source, six deputies fired their weapons.

A friend of the victim spoke via facebook message with KHQ on Wednesday and talked about her admiration for the man who was shot and killed by police.

“He was a dedicated and decorated soldier, a husband and a loyal friend,” Jessica Fisher said. “I've known him since the 5th grade.”

“He never turned his back on anyone,” Fisher said. “I can tell you with absolute certainty that no matter how dire his situation was, he never intended to hurt anyone but himself. If he were still here I would put my life in his hands a thousand times over. He was a brave soldier, and was proud to serve his country and would've laid down his life to save another.”

Spokane Police and Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies confirmed that there will be no further official updates on this story on Wednesday, but for the latest details follow reporters Alex Rozier (@AlexRozier) and Kelsey Watts (@KHQKelsey) on twitter.
