Superintendent Responds to Decision to Fire Teacher

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

The superintendent for Butte Central School says a former teacher violated a condition of her contract and that was the reason she was fired.

Superintendent Patrick Haggarty says Butte Central teachers must follow the moral religious teachings of the Catholic Church, both in the classroom and in their private lives.

He says if those morals are broken, the contract is violated, and a teacher is fired.

In January Shaela Evenson was fired for being pregnant outside of wedlock.

"When we employ a person to tech in the Catholic schools, we expect that they're personal and their public life are representative and good modeling for our children in the school," said Superintendent Patrick Haggarty.

Evenson spent eight years teaching at Butte Central.

Evenson has not officially filed a lawsuit.

According to the Associated Press she has contacted lawyers from Ohio.

ABC FOX MONTANA attempted to contact her lawyer, but our calls were not returned.
