Harrison Teen Released Back to Parents

Harrison -

Harrison School and the rest of the community is increasing security this week after a high school student, who made repeat threats to the school, is released from custody.

In January of 2013 a 15-year-old Harrison man brought two guns to school, one was loaded and the other empty.

After school authorities apprehended him, the teen was arrested and eventually pleaded "true" to the charges before he was placed in a juvenile detention facility in Deer Lodge.

"He had some mental health issues that needed to be addressed," said school Superintendent Fred Hofman. "His family was very good at making sure he got that. The court system assisted, and he did get some help in that regard."

In December of 2013, after completing treatment, the boy was slowly brought back into the school system.

By mid-January he was arrested a second time for allegedly making threats to the school on social media that a student's parent saw.

"He created a fake Facebook account and had contacted and friended some of his peers," said Superintendent Hofman. "During those conversations he made some troubling comments, which is what the parent saw."

On January 14 the boy was taken into custody.

He was charged with what would be felony intimidation and assault on a peace officer if he were an adult.

On Monday the teen was released under Judge Loren Tucker's discretion.

"I don't know that the judge had a complete picture of what was going on," Hofman said. "He had a small part. I don't think he was aware of everything, or what the concerns were, and all the problems that would be caused."

The teen is now attending the Rock Youth Center in Bozeman during the day and otherwise must be at home.

He can't have any contact with the school and no access to the Internet or weapons.

Even with the conditions, the school and town is still concerned, and have moved after school activities to other locations.

"We just decided to shut everything down early this week," said Hofman. "We'll plan on reevaluating things here as the week goes on."

The Madison County Attorney says the teen will be forced to wear the GPS location device starting Thursday.

Harrison school has moved its homecoming basketball game to Willow Creek school on Friday evening.
