Super Bowl Success for Butte's Businesses

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

Local businesses in Butte are feeling the positive effects from Sunday night's Super Bowl.

Local restaurants and bars were full for Super Bowl Sunday.

Patrons bought drinks and ordered a lot of food, making Sunday a major success for Butte's businesses.

"Yesterday for the game it was packed again all morning and all afternoon until the game started with people trying to get their pull tabs for the game," said Sam Jankovich, owner of the M&M Cigar Store. "It was a lot of fun. It was a great way to cap off the season."

Business owners, like Ray Ueland from Metal's Sports Bar & Grill, say the Super Bowl celebration starts a week before the game in Butte.

The Mining City happens to be the home of multiple bars that can sell pull tabs for the game, as approved by the Montana Department of Gaming.

Pull tabs are purchased with numbers on the back. If the score matches the numbers, then the player wins cash.

Sales of the pull tabs last through the week and make a major impact on businesses.

"Pull tabs have been a really good bump here because very few cities sell the pull tabs," said Ueland. "So we have customers coming in from Missoula, Anaconda, Helena. We had people here during the Super Bowl from Helena. They came in to buy their pull tabs and just stayed for the day."

With the pull tab sales combined with revenue generated from folks watching the game, the business owners say the game serves as a major help during the winter season when business tends to slow down.

"We've got kind of a slow stretch coming up over the next six weeks," said Jankovich. "So it really does help to give you a boost to get through February and get into St. Patrick's Day."

"The Super Bowl kind of gives us a jump start at the end of January and early February," Ueland said. "Now we just have to wait for tournament time to start coming. It's a nice jump. It's a nice impetus in the middle of the winter."
