Montana Clothing Line Gains Attention thanks to NFL Player

MISSOULA -

A Montana clothing brand is gaining international attention. It was all started by a former Griz football player and Butte native who brought the brand into the spotlight when he made it to the NFL.

Luke Anderson said the phrase "uptop" originated inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium back when his brother Colt played at safety for the Griz.

"They started doing a lot of celebrations where guys were jumping up in the air, and kind of doing a hip bump," he said.

Then, in 2009, Colt signed with the Minnesota Vikings, and made the move to the Philadelphia Eagles a year later.

Luke said it was then that Colt realized even NFL players did the "uptop" move.

"So, he asked me to make a couple T-shirts with the name "uptop" and guys doing the celebration," Anderson said.

Much to their surprise, the shirts were a hit among the pros.

"You know, my teammates know me as the guy that has my own little clothing company," Colt said.

Since then, the brand has grown to include a variety of men's and women's shirts and hats.

"It's cool just to see how popular it is you know within our locker room for the Eagles," Colt said.

Luke says they still use the same small clothing manufacturer in Victor called Northwest Design, although the orders have increased to thousands at a time, and they now ship them all over the country.

"And, we're also actually getting some international sales from Canada and Sweden," he said.

Locally, the brand is in Universal Athletics, the UM Bookstore in Missoula and several boutiques in Butte.

Bailey Harper works with Luke at Universal Athletics in Missoula and said customers quickly gained interest in uptop after Colt made it to the NFL.

"Especially little kids, they'll come in and be like, 'Mom, it's Colt Anderson's brand!' which is really cool to watch," Harper said.

But can it compete with the likes of Nike and Under Armour?

"I think it can. I think it's very versatile and it's different," Harper said.

The Andersons say they plan to expand into more stores across the state, and eventually, across the country.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
