Texan Repairs Stolen Medals, Recognizes Purple Heart

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

A little more than three weeks ago, police say Sean David Smith stole a shadowbox with a Vietnam veteran's uniform and war medals.

He allegedly tried to pawn some of what he took, and when that didn't work, they say he left a lot of it in trash cans around Kalispell and Evergreen.

Since then, many of the medals have been found and a Texas man is repairing them for free.

About a week ago, Jeff Muller got a call from a military recruiter in Kalispell who told him that the Kalispell Police Department was looking for some help repairing medals that had been stolen and badly damaged. For Muller, there was no question.

"After hearing the story that his stuff was stolen and someone tried to pawn it, I just wanted to give back to this man," said Muller.

Right now he's working on repairing the six medals so that they'll be ready to ship back on Monday. Muller says the purple heart was in the worst condition of all the medals. Everything that wasn't metal had been ripped off, which makes sense since authorities say Smith was trying to make money from just the metal.

Oddly enough, Muller recognized the purple heart when it came in the mail.

"We had a contract probably maybe fifteen years ago with the federal government to make the purple hearts and once we got this purple heart back I could see it's one that we made," explained Muller.

Muller, who's been in the business for more than twenty years, says his company made two of the six medals he's now repairing.

The alleged thief, Sean Smith, is still in the Flathead County Detention Center.
