Butte Launches New Broadband Network

BUTTE -

Butte is now the first city in Montana with a community hybrid fiber optic network.

28 miles of fiber optics were laid both under and above ground giving Butte extremely high speed Internet that will allow the public school district, the local government, and private businesses the chance to explore new opportunities technologically.

The Butte school board was the original driving factor in the network construction.

With the new broadband system the district will allow teachers and students to connect in ways previously not possible.

Governor Steve Bullock was on hand at today's ceremony, he says it's a huge stepping stone for development in Butte.

"It really is the backbone with being able to interact with consumers, interacting with students and one another, the ability to further Internet and to take advantage of opportunities going forward," said Governor Bullock.

More than 400 strands of fiber were connected during the installation.

Users will be able to access the new system in the next few weeks.
