Early this week, it was announced that Hellgate High School has a new football coach, and he's already got several ties to Missoula.
Matt Softich was chosen for the position after former coach RL Boyle resigned after last season, Softich comes to Hellgate as a former assistant for the Montana Grizzlies, as well as the head coach for the Missoula Phoenix, most recently in 2007. Softich grew up in Anaconda, and says while he's taking over a program that has gone 5-45 in the last five years, he's excited to get to work.
"I think one of the first things you have to do is get the arrow pointed in the right direction. I've said before the size of your first step is not as important as the direction that first step is. You have to make football fun again. You have to go in and teach them they are accountable for what they do on the field, teach them that we will be responsible, good citizens, and good students, and promote the program from within, then people will want to join in the program, and we can be something the school can be proud of, and Missoula can be proud of," says Softich.
