Police Cracking Down On DUIs Super Bowl Sunday

BOZEMAN -

Law enforcement agencies say you better think twice before you drink and drive Sunday.

Montana Highway Patrol and local agencies have been cracking down on DUIs around special events, and Super Bowl Sunday is no exception.

Officials are starting to see results thanks to those crackdowns, but say more work still needs to be done.

Montana Highway Patrol said they arrested 137 people for drunk driving between December 13, 2013 and January 5, 2014.

While that may be down from 170 during the same time period a year earlier, Montana Highway Patrol Sergeant Patrick McLaughlin said it's not low enough.

"Numbers are high. The officers that are out working shifts are getting one or two DUI's a shift," said McLaughlin. "We're seeing them. We're not seeing as many as we have in the past."

McLaughlin said he thinks DUI arrests are going down because people are more aware.

"Folks are starting to think more about it, that law enforcement is out there looking, and there is a lot of media campaigns nationwide," said McLaughlin.

"They know that there is a higher level of enforcement out there," said Gallatin County Undersheriff Dan Springer. "I think people have a tendency at that point to call a friend, make a plan before hand, call a cab, do something different."

Springer said they've seen a steady number of DUI arrests over the past couple of years.

Over the New Year's holiday, they arrested only three drunk drivers.

McLaughlin says with 49 million cases of beer expected to be sold across the country this weekend, crews are ramping up for increased patrols.

If you are going to be drinking at a friend's Super Bowl Party this Sunday, he suggests you make sure you have a designated driver, or plan on spending the night.

"It's going to be a lot easier to explain you're late for work because you happened to wake up at a friend's house than it is to explain to your boss you're in jail," said McLaughlin.

Montana Highway Patrol said its goal is to keep all drunk drivers off the road.

Montana Highway Patrol said four people have died already in alcohol related crashes this year.

Montana Highway Patrol and the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department said they will have extra officers out looking for drunk drivers this weekend.

If you did drink too much while watching the game, stay where you are, one hour after the post-game show there will be a special Sunday edition of the FOX MONTANA NEWS AT NINE.

We already have a great story lineup, in which we check in with many Montana athletes who either have already played in the NFL or are hoping to do so next year.
