Griz Basketball Look to Rebound From Slow Start

Posted: Updated:

After a quality win over North DakotA, the Griz reverted back to play that coach Tinkle isn't happy with.

"A lot of miscommunications which was frustrating, leaving guys wide open and not boxing out.  That was a tough one to take, so a step forward and maybe a couple back, and that's what we've been doing here early in league, and we've got to get some things corrected," says Griz head coach Wayne Tinkle.
A year ago, as the Griz were cruising through the Big Sky Conference, practices often seemed laid back, with a lot of joking, and smiling.

"Practices are definitely different from last year, we were just talking about that.  We'd have times where Big's and Smalls would just get a lot of shots up, and now it's a lot more teaching, more fundamental work, which is what this team needs.  We have five new guys on the team that are getting minutes, so we have to go over a lot of things, that with an experienced team like last year, we didn't have to," says junior guard Jordan Gregory.
Even for the several players who are new to the program, they've embraced the intensity in recent practices.

"These guys are really competitive, so every day I know I'm going to have a battle in practice.  It's a great atmosphere I think.  You said last year they joke around a lot, we do have our times when we joke around and we are a team, and a family, but we're competitive, we're extremely competitive," says junior forward and JC Transfer Chris Kemp.
And make no mistake, while the team may be down, they certainly aren't out, and know they have the time to change things for the better.
"I know a lot of the older guys, we still have confidence in our team and know what we're capable of.  It's just reflecting that and taking what you do in practice and putting it in the games, and I think once we do that, we'll be fine," says Gregory.
"The good thing is we know we can compete with the best in the league.  There still are a few teams we haven't played yet, but we feel we can compete with and beat anybody in the conference.  But not if we don't correct these things that have continued to bite us," adds Tinkle.
