Manhattan Schools Hire Attorney To Handle Lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

The Manhattan School District has hired an attorney to handle a lawsuit filed against it by the head football coach after he was accused of mishandling the teams fundraising money.

Missoula Attorney Elizabeth Kaleva will represent the school district. Back in November, Manhattan football coach Dale McQueary filed a lawsuit against the school district and Superintendent Jim Notaro.

He claims he was not given time to respond to an investigation by the Montana School Board Association on how he handled the team's fundraising money.

In the suit, he stated both he and his wife suffered emotional distress that led to sleepless nights, mental suffering and embarrassment.

Investigators found McQueary withheld thousands of dollars from the team's fundraising money from discount cards by only recording the money collected by check and keeping the cash to spend on the team.

McQueary is still teaching and coaching for the district, but MHSA requires the superintendent to report on how the district is handling fundraising money.

A court date has not been set yet.
