Woman Taken To Hospital After Home Fire

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

One woman is in the hospital and another is unharmed after a fire burned through a home in Butte early Thursday morning.

Butte-Silver Bow County Fire Marshal John Lasky says firefighters responded to a home on the 200 block of Ottawa just before 9:00 a.m. Thursday.

When firefighters arrived flames were visibly coming through the window sills.

Lasky says the fire ignited when a female resident, who uses an oxygen tank for breathing, lit a cigarette to smoke.

"Oxygen itself doesn't burn, but it makes everything around it burn," Fire Marshal John Lasky said. "I mean you can actually even burn concrete with oxygen. Once you get oxygen in an area, everything burns."

Both female residents were able to escape.

The woman using the oxygen tank was taken to the hospital, but Lasky says she didn't suffer any serious injuries.

The home was severely damaged.
