35 Gravestones Vandalized At Historic Stevensville Cemetery

STEVENSVILLE -

Stevensville police are searching for the people who vandalized 35 gravestones at a historic cemetery.

Stevensville Mayor Gene Mim Mack said it happened Saturday night at the maple wood cemetery.

35 gravestones were uprooted-- tipped over--or broken.

Mayor Mim Mack said this is the third vandalism case at the cemetary in the last year, so police are stepping up their efforts to catch the suspects.

"When these kinds of things happen, it's not only an assault against particular families involved, but it's assault against the whole community, and that has marshaled a tremendous amount of community, both support and outrage, at this act of vandalism," Mayor Mim Mack said.

They will start repairs to the gravestones next week, but some could take until spring to fix.

Police are offering a $500 reward for any information that might lead them to the suspects. If you have information you can call Stevensville police at 777-3011.
