EPA Proposing New Rules For Wood Stoves

BOZEMAN -

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing new standards for wood stoves across the country.

If the new regulations are approved, wood stoves would be required to emit less than 4.5 grams of fine particulate an hour starting next year.

That's a third of where they are now.

The standards would tighten even more in 2019, reducing the maximum emissions by 80 percent.

Experts said fine particulate from wood stoves is linked to heart attacks and decreased lung function.

The EPA will take public comment on the proposed rules for 90 days.
