Students with Special Needs Included in Dual Language Program
Missoula County Public Schools officials said they want to make sure dual language opportunities are available to kids with special needs.
MCPS has one dual language immersion program at Paxson Elementary for kindergarten and 1st grade.
At a Teaching and Learning Committee meeting on Monday, officials said they want to make sure the program is available to young students with learning disabilities, kids from low-income households or those who have other special needs.
Hatton Littman, of Missoula County Public Schools, said, "What is being presented today is how to make sure that students with special needs are being identified within the program, and that their needs can be served within the dual language immersion program."
Currently, students are chosen for the program through a lottery system, and all students are encouraged to sign up.
School officials said next school year, they'll launch the dual language program with 2nd graders at Paxson Elementary, and eventually expand it across the district.
