Fire Fighters Undergo Ice Rescue Training

MISSOULA -

Missoula search and rescue teams practiced ice water rescues Thursday to make sure they're prepared for an emergency.

Members of the fire department's Technical Search and Rescue team said the goal is quickly and safely pull a person out of the water or ice to safety.

They said the Clark Fork River is about 40 degrees during the winter and a person can reach the first stages of hypothermia in just 15 minutes in the water.

Team members said they also practice using their water proof suits, flotation boards and the ice rescue raft.

Derek Mullins, a fire fighter with the Missoula Fire Department, said, "LASER is what we're kind of focusing on and it stands for locate, access, stabilize, extricate and reassess."

There are 22 members on the fire department's search and rescue team.

They will be practicing ice rescues through January and February.

Members of the Missoula Fire Department will have ice rescue training on the Clark Fork River near the California Street bridge Thursday afternoon.

Training takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.

This is not a demonstration, but a technical rescue training exercise for firefighters.

Questions regarding MFD's ice rescue training can be directed to the fire station during regular business hours at 552-6210.
