Man Killed in Big Sky Avalanche Identified

Posted: Updated:

The man killed in an avalanche near Big Sky on Wednesday has now been identified.

Burton Kenneth Gibson, 46, was snowmobiling with two men, when two of them were buried in the avalanche sometime between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m.

Gibson was buried and killed in the slide, but the other man was able to dig himself out. The survivors made their way out to Portal Creek trail head in Big Sky and notified authorities.

On Thursday morning, Gallatin County Search and Rescue had 18 members including members of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche center going to recover Gibson and conduct an investigation.

Members will access the area by helicopter with back up snowmobile teams in place. Crews did not attempt to access the area on Wednesday night because of severe avalanche conditions.

Public access to the area is temporarily closed.
