Missoula's First Baby of 2014 Arrives Healthy

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

He was ten days early, but the Nichols family couldn't be happier about the arrival of their healthy baby boy, Fletcher-- Missoula's first baby born in the new year.

Chris and Kristen Nichols said the pregnancy was all smooth sailing, but it ended in a grueling 22-hour labor through New Year's Eve.

Fletcher was born weighing 5 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 inches long.

"He weighed a little less, because he was 10 days early," Kristen said.

Since he was one of the first babies born in 2014 in Missoula, Fletcher received a gift basket from Community Medical Center staff.

Kristen said she went into labor at 3 a.m. on New Year's Eve, and headed to Community at 5 p.m. Tuesday night.

"It was long, I mean, it was very long," she said.

Twenty-two hours later, at 1:41 a.m. on New Year's Day, the Nichols' baby boy arrived.

Kristen said, "Um, I balled…. Yeah, I kind of lost it. I cried a lot. I was just really happy that he was here."

"She did an awesome job, she's such a rock star," said Kristin's husband, Chris.

Chris watched from the sidelines, and said he was blown away by the experience.

"You know, there's just really no words for it, it was just so powerful and amazing," he said.

The Nichols' said they've been planning and preparing for Fletcher for quite some time.

Kristen said he's also the result of a pretty bad case of "baby fever."

"Yeah, I'm 32, so I've been ready for about 10 years," she said.

The couple said they hope to teach their son the importance of a good work ethic and strong values.

Chris explained, "We were both raised, like she said, to be very respectful of you know, other people, as well as adults, I don't see that a lot these days with kids."

"You know, making sure that he's really active outdoors, and not you know, on technology 24/7," Kristen added.

Kristen's parents traveled from Billings to meet their new grandson.

Community Medical officials said so far, just one other baby was born at the hospital on New Year's Day.
