Fireworks Restrictions On New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

Owners of local fireworks stands say New Year's Eve is one of their busiest days of the year.

Clint Field has been selling fireworks for over a decade. He said New Year's Eve will be one of his busiest days.

"Today is the day. It's like shopping on December 24," said Field.

Montana state law allows fireworks stands to sell 12 days during the Fourth of July and three days before New Years Day.

"I'm shut down until December 29, 30 and 31," said Field. "I'll close at 10 o'clock tonight then I'm out of business until next June."

The city of Bozeman allows residents to light fireworks off between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., but with some restrictions.

"The fireworks have to be on your property. They can't be in an alley, a public street or park," said Matt Danzer, Bozeman Police Patrol Officer.

There is also a height restriction within city limits.

"The fireworks can not exceed 15 feet," said Danzer.

Last year Bozeman Police received three complaints of fireworks being lit within the city ordinance time restrictions. Danzer said he expects to receive some compliant calls after the 1 a.m. cut off.

"We get complaints periodically from people about fireworks being loud or distributing their sleep," said Danzer.

And you can get fined if you decide to light fireworks before or after the city ordinance restricted time.

"People can receive a municipal ordinance violation, but no jail time," said Danzer.

Field says he expects to make about $5,000 in sales on New Year's Eve Day.

The city of Belgrade allows residents to light fireworks on New Year's Eve from midnight until 1 a.m.
