Custody Granted to Stabbing Victim's Father

Posted: Updated:

Billey Newton now has the ability to make life or death decisions in the welfare of his son, 37-year-old Chad Newton, who was stabbed in the heart by his wife, 39-year-old AnnMari Newton, in November.

Judge Heidi Ulbricht transferred the power from AnnMari to Billey Newton Friday morning.

Police say on November 25, AnnMari allegedly attacked her husband while they were at home with their two young children. The stabbing wound to Chad's chest caused him to bleed out.

Annmari pleaded not guilty to felony assault with a weapon and is now free after providing a $25,000 bail bond.

Chad has remained in Kalispell Regional Medical Center intensive care for about month and doctors do not him to survive his injuries.

A neurologist testified at Friday's hearing saying, "The chance of a meaningful recovery is zero."

Another doctor testified that if anything, Chad's condition has gotten worse and he is unable to breathe on his own.

Chad's older sister, Samantha White, said the siblings had conversations about what they would want to do if they were ever to be on life support, as Chad now is. She said:

"We would not want to be kept alive."
