Travelers Finding Deals On Flights For Christmas

Posted: Updated:
BELGRADE -

With more than 94.5 million Americans expected to hit the road for the holidays this year, fewer people are heading to the airport.

But those that are flying, are striking a deal by flying Tuesday and Wednesday.

The travel website trip advisor says 42 percent of people it surveyed are flying this holiday season, down from 46 percent last year.

Travel officials say that's because the average price of a roundtrip plane ticket is $35 more than last year, $436 compared to $401, while gas prices are down.

But people flying in and out of the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport Tuesday said they were able to find a deal because of the day they chose to fly.

"Today or yesterday were less expensive than the day after or over the weekend, last weekend," said Molly Johnson, flying into Bozeman.

Johnson said ticket prices she saw were double for December 26.

Charlotte Camp just wrapped up a semester of school in San Diego and said the same was true before Christmas.

"When I was looking at the weekend prices, everything was way higher to travel on Saturday and Sunday. Even yesterday was the most expensive out of everything," said Camp.

Another travel site, Johnnyjet.com said the best fares around Christmas are Christmas Eve and the Monday through Thursday before Christmas.

They also say the best time to return is New Year's Eve or after January 6.

Camp said that's what she is doing.

"I'm actually here for a long time," said Camp. "I have a three week break for school so I'm not flying back until the 13th of January."

Farecompare.com CEO Rick Seaney said airfare is cheaper on Christmas Day because most people don't want to travel then.

Trip Advisor said New York is the number one travel destination this year, followed by Orlando and Los Angeles.
