Fire Fighters Urge Caution Near Ice-Jammed Rivers

MISSOULA -

Changing weather conditions are creating hazardous river conditions in Missoula.

Missoula fire fighters said when the river freezes and thaws repeatedly, it can create dangerous ice jams on the Clark Fork River.

Ice jams can melt in warmer temperatures, causing potential floods.

Fire fighters said people planning on recreating near any body of water should bring a flotation device, and watch your footing.

Asst. Chief Jeff Brandt, of the Missoula Fire Dept., said, "The river runs through the city, and that is a place that all people go to with the bike paths and the running paths and the people recreating with their animals down there, it's a pretty big hazard."

Missoula fire fighters said they rescue people and their pets from icy waters every winter.
