Well-Known Artist's Son Wins Hockaday Competition

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

The votes are in and the winner of the 2013 Member's Salon at the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell is already working on his upcoming solo exhibit.

"I was definitely pleasantly surprised," said Jack Hagel, the winning artist.

More than 400 people came out to pick their favorites from 114 local artists, but only fourteen votes separated Hagel from second place, and 93 of the pieces got at least one vote.

"It says there's a lot of people who brought their family and friends in and voted for their, you know, not only their favorite piece, but also because they knew the person and liked the artist," explained Elizabeth Moss, the museum's executive director.

Showing his work around the Flathead, as well as Missoula and Augusta, Hagel is working on making a career from his art, just like his father, Frank Hagel, who has a few pieces in the Hockaday's permanent collection.

"I've been around it, you know, my whole life of course because that's all he's ever done and I did a lot of work early on like up through high school," said Hagel.

After selling his shares of his grandparent's tannery, where he used to work, Hagel can now put more hours into his art, make up for lost time, and try to catch up with his dad's some sixty years behind an easel.

"He's probably forgot more than I might ever even know," said Hagel.

In all of his art: the paintings, sculptures, and taxidermy, Hagel makes what he knows.

"Things that you're pretty passionate about, that you do all the time--it seems like if you stick to that it kind of comes through on the canvas," said Hagel.

It must be an award-winning formula. Besides this year, Hagel also got second place in a past contest at the Hockaday.

You have not missed your chance to see these winning pieces in person yet.

The day after Christmas until December 28, anyone can come to the museum for free during the holiday open house.
