Loyola Rams Ready To Get Basketball Title as Well

Posted: Updated:

Last season, the Loyola Sacred Heart Rams were one game away from making it to the Class B state tournament, but weren't able to get past Bigfork or Florence. This year, they hope to change that.

For the Rams of Loyola, they're a close bunch, their leading scorer is the coaches son, but all of them have spent years together on and off the court.

"The senior class is like a family.  I went to school with most of these kids since Kindergarten and they are like my brothers," says senior forward Tony Madsen.

"Coach Anderson, his first year coaching was when my dad was playing his senior year, so I've known him since I could walk, and it's been great having him as a coach through my four years," says senior forward Forestt Cooper.

Last year, the Rams were third in Western B, meaning they just missed out on the post-season. But even though they fell short last year, everyone admits expectations are higher than finishing top three.

"This year, our goals are much different.  This year you've got to get to state to win it, so we're not talking about anything else, you've got to get to state, and win it," says head coach Scott Anderson.

"Expectations are really high.  I mean we have five seniors who will all be starting and rotating in, and we have a great junior class, who've been working their butts off this summer,"  says Cooper.

Returning are leading scorer JJ Anderson and the majority of the Ram's starting lineup…but what the returners say will help them, is their depth.

"We're going to play a lot of press this year, and we'll be tired, so it will be nice to rotate everyone in,"  says Madsen.

"The fun part is they're already sharing the basketball, and they don't care who gets it.  They love to cheer for each other," says Anderson

For coach Anderson, his team lacks size in the post…but are consistent in height across their starting five.

"We go 6'2, and 6'3 across the board.  There are no little guys, and no big guys.  We'll be hard to match up with.  We'll also have trouble with some of the big guys but we can double down and try and keep it out of the half court when we face those kind of teams," says Anderson

Coming off their second class B football title, the players on the basketball team are ready for one more.

"Our goal is to win the state championship.  I think we have the team to do it.  We have the players, we have the coaching.  So hopefully we have a good year," says Madsen.
