A&S Metals in Butte Closes its Doors

Posted: Updated:

Butte-Silver Bow County will be meeting Tuesday to discuss recycling alternatives after its primary recycling facility, A&S Metals closed.

On November 30, the Butte recycling plant stopped all operations.

According to employees, it was a corporate decision to shut it down.

In November of 2012, OSHA conducted an investigation into working conditions, citing the Butte plant with 12 violations for exposing workers to multiple hazards.

In July a fire severely damaged the main office.

"It's going to be hard on Butte, because nobody wants to take the plastic, newspaper, and cardboard," said A&S Metals Manager Edward Wilcox. "Some places will take it, but they can't handle the quantity that we do through here."

Chief Executive Matt Vincent says recycle bins will be located at the corner of Platinum and Excelsior Streets, and a second bin outside the Butte Civic Center.

He encourages residents to continue dropping off their recycled materials at those two locations.
