Sacred Heart Breakers Starting with State Aspirations

Posted: Updated:

Last year, the Loyola Sacred Heart Breakers had an all-state point guard, and looked solid through the majority of their season, only to come up just short of going to state.

"We were one game away last year from going to state, and we lost a tight game to do so. So I think the girls really improved throughout the season last year, and I was proud of how they turned out, we were just one game away from getting there," says LSH head coach Carrie Heaphy.

When you look at the roster, they only return two starters, and those starters are a sophomore and junior. But despite their lack of returning seniors, the team is confident they'll be just fine.

"I think this year we have lots of good leaders, we have Liv (Olivia Roberts) and Sammy. And Mikayla (Schneider) can step in too, so we have some good leaders, and last year the seniors taught us how to lead,"

"I think those kids have really matured a lot, and I notice a big difference from last season from them," adds Heaphy.

That maturity appears to have manifested itself in more areas than just success on the court.

"I think we're able to feed off each other better now, and we have better energy.  Not that we had bad energy last year, but we're able to get along better on and off the court, and it's been easier to blend well," says LSH junior guard Olivia Round.

While they may get along great, the team admittedly is a little shorter than most, although they say they'll be able to turn even that into a positive.

"I think if we get the ball up the court, and keep running, we'll be quicker than the other teams and size doesn't matter," says Hollenback

"Definitely our speed, we have a lot of fast girls out here, we have two sophomores that just blow everybody away.  So I think that's how we'll get teams is pushing it up the court until they have to surrender I guess," laughs Round.
