AERO Aims High For Glacier Airport

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

A new organization has already raised about $100,000 to guarantee more direct flights to Glacier Park International Airport.

The Airport Expansion and Retention Organization (AERO) just started about a year ago in Kalispell.

Chairman, Paul Johannsen, says commercial airlines are willing to try new flights if you promise they will not lose money.

AERO plans to promise air carriers up front a cash baseline, only paying out if the airline loses money on the new flight, meaning commercial flights have almost nothing to lose.

The Flathead County Economic Development Authority will match whatever AERO raises, up to $100,000.

Johannsen plans to reach out to local businesses and hopes to have $250,000 in the bank by May.

"All of us are interested in seeing the Valley continue to grow and its economy be strong, but good air service is vital to a strong economy," explained Johannsen.

AERO aims to add more winter flights. Right now, they are looking into flights from Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
