Back to Back Champs Ready for Season

Posted: Updated:

The Sentinel Spartans are preparing for the upcoming season and doing so with the title of back to back state champions.  With that title comes confidence, but it also brings lofty goals and pressure to win.

"I think we all know the expectations are higher and we have to push ourselves even harder than the year before," said Senior Point Guard Lexi Steele.

"I feel like there is more pressure because people are going to want to see if Sentinel will come out on top again, and of course we want that really bad and we do have that target on our back, but we are just excited to get going and see what we have," said Senior Forward Olivia Roberts.

When the Spartans defended their title last year they did it without star DJ Reinhardt, this year they have to adjust after losing Amanda Bear Medicine and Liz Harper.

"I'm not sure you can replace Liz or replace Bear but I think we are going to look differently than it most recent past.  I still think we have speed but it's different, it's not Liz Harper running the floor in two seconds after stealing the ball and finishing over three people," said Head Coach Karen Deden.

Coach Deden says the most challenging part for her this year will be making sure the girls stay focused from the very beginning and not be solely focused on a third straight title, which the players admit is absolutely on their minds and they won't settle for anything less.

"Ever since state ended last year that has always been on my mind, always been one of my goals, and through the whole offseason that's what I've always thought about," said Roberts.

"Yes, for sure winning the state championship we would be very disappointed if we didn't win it again, Said Steele.

"I would be disappointed if we didn't go far, I think as players we underestimate the competition and I think Capital is pretty loaded and Glacier is pretty loaded.  When you are a player you're always excited when you're a coach you see what other teams have," said Deden.

Sentinel starts their season on the road December 13th against Billings Senior.
