Coastal Carolina Football Arrives in Missoula

Posted: Updated:

Much has been made this week of the plunging temperatures for this Saturday's game.  And while it's something the Chanticleers haven't played in before, it didn't seem to phase them during their walk-through earlier this evening.

"It's good man, we're down here to play football. It's cold, you can't deny that.  But it's not as bad as I was expecting.  I was expecting way worse.  I know my hands are a little cold, but my body feels good," says CCU senior RB Lorenzo Taliaferro.

The hands can easily turn into icicles, and the heaters will be at full power, no different for the home-team Grizzlies.  What is different, is the Chanticleers had to purchase a large amount of equipment just for the weather.

"Didn't have the thermal underwear, we didn't have the hand warmers, we didn't have any of those things.  There are a lot of our guys who have never actually physically seen snow.  There are a lot of our guys who don't own coats.  So those were the types of things we did, and we also put some money into sideline warmers that type of thing," says CCU head coach Joe Moglia.

In addition to the equipment purchases, in an attempt to prepare for the game conditions, the team showed up two days early, getting an extra day of practice in the elements.

"We just want the guys to be able to put on their shoulder pads, wear their helmets, we want them to get used to running around, and catching the ball in real cold weather.  We tried to fool around with cold balls for example at practice, but it was 70 degrees this week for us, so the cold ball lasted about three or four minutes," says Moglia.

Not only will they battle the elements, the Chants are nearly 2500 miles from home, by far their longest trip in school history.  Previous, the furthest west the program had traveled was to Toledo, 724 miles from Conway South Carolina.

"Whenever you go into a new environment, it's always exciting.  To go into the cold, it's different than what most of us have ever played in, so to get this opportunity is good, we just have to take advantage of it," says Taliaferro.
