Whitefish Mountain Resort's Opening Day Surprises

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH -

Opening day at Whitefish Mountain Resort this December 7 is going to look different than it has for almost two decades.

It is a day that only comes once a year and crews are out right now making sure it goes off without a hitch.

"It's the beginning of the ski season. You really don't believe it's here until you actually get on your skis and ride the lift up," said Son Vu, a local planning to ski on opening day.

Opening day at the Whitefish Mountain Resort is bright and early this Saturday, December 7 at 9:00 a.m.

"Opening day is always an excited kind of nervous," said Riley Polumbus, a spokeswoman for the Resort.

The big surprise this year had to be kept a secret until Thursday's ABC Montana newscast.

"This year we're very excited because we will be opening Hellroaring basin, this is the first time in it's 17 year existence we've been able to open this section of the mountain on opening day," explained Polumbus.

This is just one of the slopes bringing Son Vu back.

"Most of my friends and I have been waiting for the mountain to open for a long time," said Vu.

"We do have some guests in town who will be here as well as obviously a lot of locals," said Polumbus.

At the Base Lodge there is about twenty-one inches of snow, but in the mountains there are over fifty inches.

"You're worried about the temperature, but you balance it against the fun of skiing, so at this point you brave the temperatures to get some turns in," said Vu.

Chairs two, three, and six will all open at 9:00 a.m. and chair one will open just half an hour later. Skiers will also have about 1,200 square feet of extra space at the Base Lodge. Polumbus says that more than six feet of snow has fallen at the summit since the beginning of November.

Four new intermediate runs are awaiting skiers on the North side of the ski area, opening a little later in the season

Ticket prices also went up two bucks, now costing $69 a day.
