EPA Completes Superior Area Soil Cleanup

Posted: Updated:

Crews successfully removed 27-thousand cubic yards of contaminated soil in Superior, Mont.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the completion of the project today.

Mining waste containing heavy metals like lead and arsenic were removed from 38 residential properties and the Mineral County Airport.

The soil was placed at a repository in Wood Gulch.

The contamination came from historic mining activity at the Iron Mountain mine and mill.

The EPA will continue to watch the area to ensure safety before handing the site over to Montana.
