Experts Want Drivers To Prepare For Winter Roads

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

This weekend is the first of the holiday season. That means people will be loading up their cars, and heading to the mountains whether it's to cut down a Christmas tree, or just to enjoy the snow.

As you get ready to hit the roads and this winter, Montana Ace managers say it's never to early to get prepared.

"I can't tell you how many times you read about the people who did not prepare, and they get stranded," said store manager Brian Sanders.

Sanders said he sees more people each year coming in, buying supplies for driving this season, and now store employees are working harder than ever to give customers safety tips.

"It's becoming more noticeable every year. People are taking awareness of Montana driving, how dangerous it is just to leave your house to go down to the store," Sanders said.

Step one, Sanders said, starts before you even get in your car. He said to know the weather and road conditions before you set out on your trip.

"Preparedness. Mentally prepared, not just the vehicle and the people around you, but you, yourself need to be prepared for the weather conditions," Sanders said.

Once you look up the weather conditions, step two is packing the proper equipment to ensure you safely get to your destination.

"Traction sands, ice scraping, ice melting," Sanders listed.

He said to pack the basic things you would take on a camping trip, like blankets, sleeping bags, and anything to keep you warm.

"Food is a big one. Food and water, and it's so easy to store those things under the back seat," Sanders added.

Store managers said it's also important to pack emergency gear for your vehicle, like extra light bulbs, a back up for your battery, and jumper cables.

"Things that if your car does die, you have a back up power source, not only to get the vehicle running again, but also to run equipment that would keep you warm during that time," Sanders said.
