Jewish Community Celebrating Hanukkah And Thanksgiving Together

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

The Jewish community is celebrating Hanukkah.

The eight-day holiday began at sundown Wednesday.

The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

In Hebrew, Hanukkah means dedication.

This is the first time since 1888 the holiday lands on Thanksgiving.

The rabbi at the Congregation Beth Shalom in Bozeman said the Jewish community will combine the two this year.

"We'll be combining some food recipes, for example latkes, which we usually eat at Thanksgiving with applesauce, this year we'll have cranberry sauce on our latkes," said Rabbi Ed Stafman, Congregation Beth Shalom.

The next time Hanukkah will overlap with Thanksgiving will be in 79,043 years.
