UM Law School Honors WWII Veterans

MISSOULA -

Two distinguished World War II combat veterans were honored on Monday at the University of Montana's School of Law.

Every year -- usually close to Veterans Day -- the UM Military Law Society hosts a ceremony honoring veterans.

Dozens of community members crowded into a UM law school classroom on Monday to hear from the veterans, who each shared memories from WWII.

Richard Munro, 88 is a Montana native, and was a B-17 tail gunner in the Air Force, who flew in 27 combat missions.

"By the time I finished my missions, we had very little opposition from German fighters," Munro said.

Frank McCauley, age 97, was a P-47 flying ace, with 5.5 confirmed air kills. He said he and a comrade were credited with a "half kill" each, after they shot the same enemy plane down at the same time.

McCauley explained, "So, you had 16 guns firing at the same time -- it made quite a blast."

"It's really amazing to be able to sit down and speak with these gentlemen and share their experiences," said Second Lieutenant in the Montana Army National Guard, Bradley Jones.

Jones said McCauley is one of only two living flying aces in Montana, and he felt honored to meet both men.

"As a younger soldier, as a current soldier, you know, our experiences are parallel and yet so completely different," Jones said.

The UM Military Law Society presented each veteran a shadowbox holding an American flag and a portrait taken during their time of service.
