New Way To Grade Comes To Whitefish

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH -

Nearly six-hundred students at Waldown Elementary in Whitefish will take home a new report card at the end of the trimester next Tuesday, November 26.

Standards based grading has come to Whitefish.

Rather than averaging scores for an overall letter grade, the new system breaks down subjects into individual skills and evaluates students on each one.

A committee of representatives for each grade level, kindergarten through fourth grade, and the principal began developing the new report card last March.

Principal, Linda Whitright, says Common Core's implementation next fall provided the push to the new system.

"There were some concerns, and will there be, as we progress through this? Yes, there's going to be because it looks so different," said Whitright.

While standards based grading is at Waldown to stay, Whitright says modifications could be made as she receives feedback from parents and staff.

After a dismal winter, the U.S. economy sprang back to life in the April-June quarter, growing at a fast 4 percent annual rate on the strength of higher consumer and business spending.
After a grim start to 2014, the U.S. economy has rebounded with vigor and should show renewed strength into next year.
