Lookout Pass Brings In More Than 500 People For Opening Day

LOOKOUT PASS -

Lookout Pass on the Montana-Idaho border is the first resort to open this season.

The anticipation is finally over.

"Definitely super excited. I've been waiting for this day all summer, so I'm definitely glad it's here," said snowboarder Andrea Good.

"I'm pretty sure two-thirds of the people here are missing school for this," said Lookout pass employee, Chuck Schmidt.

Fresh snow and good weather made for the perfect opening day of Montana's ski season, at Lookout Pass Ski Resort, a day avid snowboarders and skiers like Wheat Thins and his group of friends have been waiting for all year long.

"It's awesome. I'm stoked on weather. We're starting off the season good, so I'm very happy," Wheat Thins said.

Lookout Pass is the first resort to open this winter, with more than 400 skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes by noon and more people coming in later in the afternoon.

"If you think about it being a Thursday, not Friday or Saturday, over 400 people is incredible. That's an amazing number," said Lookout Pass winter sports and marketing director, Christopher Barrett.

Barrett said about 12 runs on the front of the mountain are currently open with more to come through the season.

"As soon as there's enough snow," Barrett said.

Right now there's about 20 inches of snow. Once there's about six to 12 more inches of snow, the back side of the mountain will be opening too.

"There's going to be tons of snow here. The back side will be open sooner than later," Barrett said.

Barrett said this is one of the most promising season openers they've had in the past few years.

"I mean last year was pretty rough, and the weather was a lot colder," Barrett said.

Despite a rough start last year, 2012 saw a record number of visitors with more than 65,000 people hitting the slopes.

Lookout Pass hopes they can keep the growth spurt going, with an expansion of 700 more acres in the next few years.

Other area ski resorts are getting ready to open soon. Snowbowl opens December 6, and Lost Trail Powder Mountain is getting ready to open in the coming weeks, but has yet to announce an opening date.
